Villa Porto Gaio  - Punta Solchiaro - Isle of Procida

Procida is the smallest and one of the less well known among the islands in the Bay of Naples, but it is the best loved by aficionados because it has retained better and longer the typical characteristics of a Mediterranean island.  In its history, the high population density contributed to a style of popular architecture which today makes a strong visual impact, with its picturesque white and pinks houses which have a particular charm.

The sombre construction of tufo which bounds the side of the island facing the Phlegrean coast is a fourteenth century aragonese castle, until recent years used as a prison. Ancient towers rise above the fishermen's houses which are painted in the traditional colours of white, pink and blue. The three villages of this island are Marina Grande, where ferry boats and hydrofoils dock, Marina Chiaiolella, the tourist harbour and the exotic fisher’s village Marina Corricella. The small size of the island allows you to take wonderful walks through the small roads as it takes 30 minutes to cross by foot the island.

Corricella

The dome one can see in Marina Grande belongs to the abbey church of St. Michael which has a precious altar decorated with multicoloured marble and a beautiful painting by Luca Giordano, which repays the visit! From a certain altitude we have an admirable view of the celebrated Chiaiolella, with its still unpolluted stretch of sea, where the fishermen bring their boats into land and of the little island of Vivara, completely uninhabited and Fauna and Flora Reserve. The atmosphere of Procida has been a source of inspiration for great writers. Alphonse de Lamartine set his novel * Graziella * on the island, and Elsa Morante entitled one of her novels l'Isola di Arturo ( the island of Arthur/Arcturus ) after the stars she had seen shining in the night sky above Procida. A variety of movies have been located in this island, a recent famous one is “Il Postino” Oscar winner with P.Noiret and M.Troisi, directed by Antonio Skàrmeta.

Procida is hourly connected with Ischia, Naples and Pozzuoli by ferry boats which take 50 minutes and Hydrofoils, 35 minutes, which allow you to plan day tours to Naples, Sorrento, Pompei etc…
